Good job with audio blogging

Wow, you found some really great audio examples. Actually there were even two mentioned that I had planned on using as examples in class. Nice work. I don't see too many comments, but I hope everyone has the chance to listen to each other's selections and learn from them. Nice job, guys.

Assignments given on 6th

This week you need to shoot your photo story and post one image from your story on the blog. That's all folks!

For reminders on what to look for when shooting your story, check out previous postings. Hope all goes well, can't wait to see your images !

Life of a Photojournalist

When I was looking around Mediastorm, I found a video that I wouldn't normally sit down and watch, but it pulled me in. It follows the last 17 years of Photojournalist Jim Lo Scalzo as he goes to India, Antarctica, Iraq, Iowa, and ultimately discovers that he should be at home with his wife and newborn son. The pictures were really interesting and really evoke a response when you're looking at them and the audio gave you an insight to what he was thinking when he was traveling.
http://mediastorm.org/0014.htm

Oh, and you guys should go watch this because the animation is amazing.

Pitbulls and lipstick?

I was surfing around npr and I came across this audio. It's about Sarah Palin saying that the only difference between hockey moms and pitbulls is the lipstick. (I know, I know. We've all heard it.) I'll add the link at the bottom. I'm just glad to see that people are sticking up for themselves because it was seriously an obnixious thing to say. (As if hockey moms wake up at ungodly hours just to put lipstick on to go impress someone at a skating rink.) Here's the link. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=95251615

Iraq and friends.

This story really hit me hard. My friend is over in Iraq and it is going to be part of his life forever. Before he left him and his fiancee got married and this is the first obsticle that they will have to deal with. It made me realize that my friend is going to change and it scares me. All that I can do is hope and pray that everything goes well.
I think this story was done well because from the beginning I was captivated. It made me think about myself and things that have happened to me. It was personal and it was truth.
http://mediastorm.com/0020.htm

HIV and Aids

I like this video alot because its doesnt just incorperate a hole movie but also has alot of picutes of there living conditions and how these people live their every day lives having to deal with HIV and AIDS. It also doesnt just show that everyone lives the same life if you have AIDS, you dont just sit there and wilt away, some of theres people still and try carry their life out as if they were normal and healthy....here the link http://mediastorm.org/0012.htm

I know, I know

I'm sure we've all watched the videos on MediaStorm, but honestly I think this story is really depressing and I think everyone needs to know about this and things like this. I think people really need to know that things like this happen and it's not just some story your mom made up to scare you or whatever. Not only that, but this essay reminds me of a two of my favorite photographers, Shaun O'Boyle and Tom Kirsch. They photograph mostly abandoned buildings with some sort of history. For example, they both have photographed a lot of asylums and plants. Hospitals, jails, mines...etc. It's pretty interesting, if anyone likes that type of photography. But anywaysss, here's a link, because I know I dont make any sense when I'm tired, which I am, so peaceee. I'll put links to those photographers' websites too at the bottom.

I thought This Was Funny.

I found a website that has our current president Bush sounding so...... I can't even find the words. I liked it because it was funny but, im really scared that someone like him got elected twice. Here's the link, ENJOY http://politicalhumor.about.com/library/blbushismsaudio.htm

Theater, anyone?

I found this on the New York Times online newspaper. The sound slide has actor Peter Sarsgaard talking about "The Seagull", the Broadway play he is starring in. I chose this sound slide because i found what he said about people's reaction to the play interesting. I think there a a few pictures that are quite good.http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2008/10/03/theater/20081003-peter-sarsgaard-seagull/index.html

What happens behind closed doors....

While browsing Media Storm, I found this story. I find it really interesting, because noone really knows what goes on behind closed doors. This story is about a group of drug additcs that live in a very rich section of Manhattan. A lot of people think that drug addicts are only people who are poor, but anyone can be drug addict. Drugs know no bounderies or color or race. Here is their story!

Assignments given on the 29th

Blog- Post a link to an example of good audio. Look for something you like and then tell us why you liked it. (Due by midnight Saturday)
2 Comments on other people's posts, which means you need to listen to their audio clips. (Due by next class)
A photo that utilizes a shallow depth of field (Due on the server within the first five minutes of class)
A proposal for you feature story. Please provide two printed copies of your proposal/s.(Due at the start of next class)

Feature Story Tips

When you write your feature story proposal, or draw out a project road map, include as many specifics as you can. What are the main elements of the story you intend to include? When will you shoot? Is the time of day important? What are specific shots you will look for? What sounds will you need to record? etc.

A feature story needs to have a solid set of pictures that could tell the story in a nutshell. (5-8 photos) When you actually produce your soundslides piece you will need a total of 12-18 images or so. Every image needs to be informative and aesthetically sound. In other words, no snapshots. Remember the elements of composition we discussed. Consider changing your angel, etc. Make the photos interesting and memorable.

Remember to include...
  • An opening shot- one that introduces the viewer to what is going on and brings us into the story.
  • Every story needs to have at least one long shot, one medium shot, and one close shot.
  • Give us a reason to be interested- help us connect. Remember, the face is the human communicator.

If you have questions or ideas, email Jerome or myself anytime. Please think of several options you could use for this assignment and work up a thorough proposal for at least one, preferably two. Good luck, everyone! Have fun with this!

There wasn't an article with this picture, just a caption, but I thought that it was a really good shot. It's of Bjorn Phau from Germany in a game against Andy Roddick during a semi-final match at the China Open in Bejing. I thought it was a good picture because you can see the emotion and strain on his face.

Proctor Gets Destroyed

Proctor loses yet another game of football. I'm kind of disappointed that they lost. The football team that was at proctor when i attended won almost all of their games. Now when i hear about proctor football games, it's always "Proctor lost another game" They need to get everything undercontrol with practice and work as a team. Team work wins the game. Personally i think everyone on the team is playing for their own shine and thats not good. Well here's the link to this article. http://www.wktv.com/sports/highschool/29829389.htmlI really hope proctors football team gets their act together and realize that team work is escential.

Jets vs Dolphins

This is a photo of Bryan Thomas and Calvin Pace of the Jets tackling Chad Pennington of the Dolphins. I like this sport shot of the Jets vs the Dolphins. It must have been a challenge to capture this intense moment right before they come crashing down on the guy. If you want to check out more pictures like this, here you go: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football

Jimmie in for the Chase?

I was surfing through my favorite sports website, http://www.lowesracing.com/ of course because of Jimmie Johnson and I came across this interesting picture. My comments really have nothing to do with the artical itself (http://www.lowesracing.com/articles/view/310) They have to do with the picture. When we were watching that sports video in class, one of the guys mentioned that if you wanted to be a sports photographer, you had to stop being lazy and get up. Go to the field or track or where ever your sport is being held the day before or after the game or race has taken place to get interesting shots. I know for a fact that this picture was taken before race day because Jimmie is getting into his car from the garage. On race day he enters his car from pit road. So, with that in mind, this photographer wasn't lazy. He went to take pictures before the day of the race and I think that's important if you want to make it in sports photography. It shows people that you can do a job without being lazy about it.

Is it all over for the Yankees?!?!?!?!

While searching on the NY Times website I found a verry interesting story about how they were doing. I for one thought they were doing well, but after reading this story, i found out that that wasn't true. They are loosing people left and right to injuries. In reading I found out that they just lost one of their players,  Chien-Ming Wang, to a foot injury, and they said that that was rough on them. Just recently they lost  Brian Cashman, which set them into a burning sprial downfall, and was what sealed their fate. They were actually a very good team this season, but as said by the NY Times, "Health was the biggest factor." and it doesn't matter how good you are, if the health of your team is failing and they continue to get hurt, then you are in for a whole world of hurting. The whole story is available for viewing here!

To the leaft is a picture taken by Tony Gutierrez/Associated Press of the NY Times. It is a picture of Brian Cahman exiting the field.

Sports

This is a photo from the espn website, from NFL's last season game between the bengals and the browns, who are going to be playing each other this coming weekend. The only reason i posted this picture was it reminded me of one of the ones that were shown in class today. You can see close of on the players face to see the emotion, i think its a pretty good shot.

Sports...

I forgot to leave the links...http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-elliott22-2008sep22,0,3782583.column

I thought these images were really impressive. They are like classic decisive images. Anthony says that the guy above is out; I say he can still make it to safety. Anyone else have an opinion? In or out? Lol that is totally a line from Aladdin and the King of Thieves. Anyways then there is the one where the dude is in the air about to catch the ball that is a good one too. Finally the classic baseball bat breaking image. I would love to have one of those images in my portfolio. Anyways...they lost. That is about all there is to the article. It just talks about how much they have lost so far. Boring stuff like that. So what do you all think about the images? Which one do you like the best? Is the guy in or out? Did the jumping guy hurt anything when he landed?...

Travis Barker, DJ AM injured in crash

Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker and popular DJ, Adam Goldstein were injured when their private plane crashed into an embankment late Friday night. The crashed killed both the pilot and co-pilot as well as Barker's body guard and assistant. The two are listed in critical condition and are currently being treated for second and third degree burns in a Georgia hospital. They are both expected to make a full recovery, though the process will be very long.I had seen the two on the VMAs not even two weeks ago and now they're both in the hospital fighting for their lives. It really lets you know that it doesn't matter who you are, your life could be over in an instant.
Here's just one of many links

Global Warming!!!

Wow!!!. Global warming is having a big effect on the environment as we speak. Animals such as polar bears are hanging on for dear life. This is not just an issue in areas where polar ice caps exist. Pretty soon all the ice that was melted is going fill the cities. (Thats just a theory) I dont know about everyone else but i dont want sit around and wait to see if global warming exists. We already know about how the o-zone layers are depleting, causing UV rays and other harmful rays to hit the earth. People who have sun bathed for years should be able to tell the difference in suns ray. The ozone layer depletion can cause some diseases such as cancer on the skin. This is a scary situation that makes me wanna stay inside my house all summer (but i don't haha) Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and here's a link http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=global+warming&FORM=MSNH

Truth is Beauty

It used to be, if you weren't the "best of the best," you weren't featured in a cosmetic ad. But, this is changing and fast. Comsmetic companys are starting to focus older women, showing that wrinkles are beautiful and that if you are not perfect, that is ok. They are starting to do this, because it is more appealing to women out there and it is easier for them to relate to someone close to their age, verses someone younger than them. Ellen DeGeneres was just hired by Cover Girl, a huge cosmetic company, where they stated "that even though her attubutes are negitive, that is the reason we hired here." At the age of 50, Eggleston Bracey the president of Procter & Gamble, the parent company of CoverGirl, called her an "authentic beauty". I personally think that this is the best thing that they could have ever done for there company's image. Most older and even younger women out there, want someone that they can relate to, not some plastic doll looking women. They want a realistic gole. They have these ads out of these beautiful women, but not everyone, is so to speak "flawless." They have blemishes, and wrinkles and flaws, they are human. So in doing so, I believe that they are making a great move in the right step, and you can read more, by clicking on this link(picture taking off the NY Times Website, Property of Cover Girl INC.)

Mexican Flavor from NYC

I found this in an article called "From New York Soil, a taste of Home" in the New York Times online. It was part of the New York Region News. The article is about farmers in Staten Island who grow chiles, onions, and "tomatillos"( a type of tomato) native to Mexico. This has been great for people looking for authentic Mexican produce and who want fresh, Mexican dishes. I think the picture (although not a close-up) is is a good environmental picture because it shows farmer Agustin Juarez tending to the vegetables and herbs he grows in a small Staten island farm.

Using food as Political Incentive

There are times were I just can't help despising where our world is these days. This is one of those times. I was looking through the New York Times site and found this article. It is about the government banning groups from feeding people that need it. Alot of it being children and many with aids such as the boy in the image. This boy is 17 years old and has aids and his government decided to deny him food because they thought that the people giving it out were against them. How can people be that way? To deny a person food and water, it makes me sick. Just looking at this photograph breaks my heart. I mean aren't governments supposed to be...I don't know...for the people? Instead people just use them to gain power. Sad. Well here is the link if you want to check it out. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/30/world/africa/30zimbabwe.html?ref=africa

Sucide rising in recent years?

I really thought I was going to have a hard time with this, considering it doesn't have anything to do with touchdowns or how fast a race car can go around a track, but I actually found something fairly interesting. I was looking through the Charlotte North Carolina Observer and came across this artical (http://www.charlotteobserver.com/nation/story/185511.html). It's about the rising sucide rate in the United States military. The Army's suicide rate was 18.1 per 100,000 last year and that is the highest that it's been. Five years ago it was only 9.8. They say that among other reasons, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan are the cause of this. What I'm wondering is even if you're against or for the war, does it change your opinion on the war? I'm neither for or against the war, but that's here nor there. It still made me stop and think that maybe the U.S goverment is laying the stress on these soliders and the result of that isn't something the military can/should be proud of. What's your take on it?

Difibrillators are they really worth it?

Difibrillators were first introduced into the scean, in 1985, and there were called an "emergency room in your chest." But what was failed to be mentioned, was they are not a solution. The artical I got off the New York Times, tells about the falling numbers and all of the people that are decling getting these merical devices. What alot of people are finding, is that there is a great risk in getting these, ranging from infection to them not working correctly. Also, they are not made to "save your life" so to speak. They are there just to help you, so you can get help. And if that doesn't stop you, the price might, averaging $50,000. In my opinion, i would recomend them, beacuse if done right and taken care of, there will be no chance for the infection to arise. My grandmother for instance, has one, and it has saved her life I can't tell you how many times. And when I say saved her life, it gave her time or someone in here building to call the ambulinse for her. So I guess what i am trying to say, is if one is needed, go do it. There are Doctors out there that know what they are doing, and how to prevent the infection, and to put them in correctly. Because that extra "jolt" that they give off to restart your heart so you have time to get help, can mean the difference between life and death. I would get one if i needed one. I urge you all to read this artical.

I would enjoy all of your feedback, and your views on this subject. Thank you.

(enclosed is a picture taken off the NY Times site taken by Peter Dasilva, and it is a picture of a Difibrillator.)

Fourth World?

I found this image while I was surfing on the Albany Times Union website (here's a link, but don't click until you read my postie), but just to prove something wrong, in my opinion. What Jerome was talking about earlier in class regarding text and photographs; that text is primary and photographs are second. The introduction to this article, which included this picture, was not very strong in my opinion, as opposed to the picture which as you can see, is very strong. I think that many people today overlook how strong you can speak with photographs because they think oh, anyone can take a picture but it takes an educated person to write something powerful enough to move you. I don't think it's as much like that anymore, as we keep moving more towards art, but certainly the older generations that I've been around feel that way. It's very frustrating. Not sure what you were exposed to. But. Anyway, this photograph is of a dehydrated child who has cholera in Malawi, and the medical crew is trying to give him an IV drip. It's sad to see how much harder it is for countries that don't live in a first world nation. They don't have access to half as many things as we do, whether it be medical or educational or necessity related. Click on that link I left up there. Really, take the time to read the articles, or at least the introduction and see how much more powerful this image is as opposed to the written article. Sometimes, it really amazes me.

---
Also! Not that this has anything to do with this assignment, but the National Geographic Photography Field Guide is like six dollars at Barnes and Noble. It was in the bargain bin. Haha, I was like score. So if anyone was looking for one of those, hit up B&N. Make sure you ask for the general photography one though, because apparently there's categorized ones too.
peace.

What is Photojournalism?

Photojournalism is...
1)A means of communication- as coined by Frank Luther Mott in 1942.
2)A combination of photos and words
- Photos became symbolic- they were universal and could communicate feelings and emotions. Eventually they become connected to and symbolic of ideas.
3)A combination of feelings and the factual

Photojournalism does...
1)Inform
2)Motivates
3)Reveals facts and information on the first look
4)Is created in reality

Photojournalism should...
1)Have a strong story telling feature
2)Have a main object or focal point
3)Show us something we could not ordinarily see for ourselves
4)Reveals facts and information on the first look and more on the second look
5)Should answer the classic questions of journalism...who/what/when/where/why/how

Photojournalism is not...
1)A photo that includes inner reaches of the photographer's personality
2)Personal photos- vacation photos, etc.
3)Fine Art or pieces of personal expression

Remember...
1)The face is the human communicator- as you try to make images that communicate, remember that eyes, the mouth and hands all are powerful visual communicators
2)Henri Cartier Bresson and the decisive moment or peak action.

Welcome

Welcome to our photojournalism blog. This semester, as we look to understand different ways photojournalism is used in today's world, we will be looking at various online sources. Hopefully we can learn from one another, as well as a wide range of professionals within the field. Happy blogging!
